Jam/UnJam is a small utility for file compression and
decompression. It is not designed to compete with the widely used professional archiver such as PKZip
2.04g, ARJ 2.50 or LHA 2.13. Jam/UnJam is not a full-fledged archiver and can only compress one file at a
time. Jam/UnJam use less than 50 kb of memory while giving satisfactory compression rate at a fast speed - almost as fast as
PKZip (normal compression). The professional archivers are all memory hungry - PKZip uses more than 250
kb, ARJ about 290 kb, LHA about 300 kb, and RAR uses even more.
Other features:
Smart I/O buffering. Jam/UnJam has its own buffer for file I/O. Thus obviate the need of external
disk cache such as SmartDrive. When memory is abundant, jam/unjam will use larger memory as buffer to speed up file I/O. When free memory is as low as 48
kb, small file I/O buffer will be used. Compression rate will not be affected by the size of the buffers.
Tamper sensitive. Jam/UnJam will perform a fast self-check before compressing a file. If the
program file is modified, such as by a virus, it will report immediately to the user.
